How Good Day Face Oil supports the Skin Barrier

The Good Day Face Oil is engineered utilizing a biomimetic approach to topically applied lipids. The formulation achieves "skin mimicry" by replicating the complex chemical composition of human sebum and the stratum corneum’s lipid matrix. This is primarily facilitated through the strategic combination of Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil and Olive-derived Squalane.

Technically, Jojoba is not a triglyceride oil but a liquid wax ester (comprised of C40–C46 fatty acids and alcohols), which reflects the approximately 25% wax ester content found in natural human sebum. Squalane, a saturated hydrocarbon derived from the unsaponifiable fraction of olive oil, provides a stable, biocompatible equivalent to squalene, a key component of the skin’s surface lipids. This precise synergy allows the formula to disappear into the skin via effortless absorption, signaling the sebaceous glands to maintain equilibrium and ensuring a non-greasy, "zero-weight" finish.

1. Skin Lipid Mimicry

The core of the formula's barrier support lies in its ability to mimic the skin's natural structure.

  • Jojoba Oil (30%): This is technically a liquid wax ester, making it the closest ingredient to the skin’s natural sebum. This compatibility allows it to balance the skin and absorb effortlessly.

  • Squalane (20%): This olive-derived active mimics a key component of the skin’s natural lipid layer, providing lightweight hydration that the skin immediately recognizes.

2. Moisture Retention and Sealing

The formula is designed to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) without being occlusive or heavy.

  • Meadowfoam Seed Oil (40%): This serves as the primary sealant, locking in moisture to provide a soft, "cushioned" finish. Crucially, it seals hydration without suffocating the skin, allowing the barrier to function naturally.

3. Calming and Repairing

  • Oat Kernel Oil (8%): This ingredient is rich in skin-supportive lipids that calm irritation and reduce redness, adding a layer of richness that helps soothe a compromised barrier.

  • Bisabolol (0.5%): A potent anti-inflammatory active that helps reduce visible irritation and supports overall skin comfort.

4. Antioxidant Protection

  • Vitamin E (0.5%): While primarily used to protect the formula itself from oxidation, it provides antioxidant protection that helps shield the skin's surface lipids from environmental stress.

How to Choose a Face Oil That Hydrates Without Feeling Greasy

A founder’s breakdown of what makes a face oil effective, from jojoba and squalane to meadowfoam and oat oil. Learn how face oils can support the skin barrier without feeling greasy.

I made Good Day Face Oil because I wanted something simple, effective, and grounded in skin science.

The idea behind this formula is straightforward: support the skin barrier with lipids that feel compatible with skin, absorb well, and help reduce moisture loss without leaving a heavy finish. That thinking shaped every ingredient choice in Good Day Face Oil.

Why I focused on skin-mimicking lipids

When skin feels dry, tight, or reactive, the issue is often a barrier issue. The skin barrier depends on a healthy mix of lipids to keep water in and irritants out. So I chose a small group of ingredients that are known for their compatibility with skin and their ability to support that lipid layer.

That is why Good Day is built around jojoba, squalane, meadowfoam, and oat oil.

Why I chose jojoba oil

Jojoba is one of the most useful ingredients in skincare because it behaves differently than many plant oils. Technically, jojoba is a liquid wax ester, not a typical triglyceride oil. That matters because human sebum also contains wax esters.

In practical terms, that gives jojoba a strong affinity with the skin. It absorbs beautifully, feels balanced, and helps the formula feel more intuitive on the face rather than overly rich or greasy.

Why I chose olive-derived squalane

Squalane is lightweight, stable, and very skin-compatible. Since it’s derived from squalene, a lipid naturally found in the skin, it helps soften and smooth without leaving residue. It also improves the slip of the formula, which is part of why Good Day feels light rather than oily.

Why I chose meadowfoam seed oil

Meadowfoam gives the formula structure. It is rich in long-chain fatty acids, which help create a soft, cushioned finish on the skin. More importantly, it helps reduce transepidermal water loss, meaning it helps keep moisture from evaporating too quickly. I wanted the formula to feel protective, but not occlusive, and meadowfoam does that very well

Why I chose oat kernel oil

Oat kernel oil brings the calm. Dry skin is often also irritated skin, so I wanted an ingredient that could help support both comfort and barrier function. Oat oil contains skin-supportive lipids, including phospholipids and ceramide-related compounds, and is especially helpful for skin that looks red, reactive, or overstimulated.

Why I included bisabolol

Bisabolol is there for its soothing properties. It’s known for helping reduce visible irritation and for supporting skin that is feeling stressed.

Why I included vitamin E

Vitamin E serves two purposes. First, it provides antioxidant support. Second, it helps protect the integrity of the formula itself by slowing oxidation in the oil blend. In an anhydrous product, stability matters, so this was a practical choice as much as a skin-benefit choice

Why I kept the formula small

I kept Good Day to six ingredients on purpose, because this formula did not need more. Each ingredient has a clear role: support the barrier, improve absorption, reduce moisture loss, calm irritation, and protect the formula.

That was the goal from the beginning. A face oil that feels good, functions well, and is built on real formulation logic instead of filler.

It Costs What?

Body oil pricing doesn’t always make sense. Some smell expensive. Some feel like a deal. Most look nearly identical. So what are you actually paying for? Here’s a simple comparison using popular luxury brands:

Brand A:

  • $8.75/oz

  • Sunflower oil first

  • Includes fragrance

Brand B

  • $11.05/oz

  • Sunflower oil first

  • Includes fragrance

Brand C

  • $16.06/oz

  • Sweet almond oil first (Good, but…)

  • Caprylic/capric triglyceride is second

  • Includes fragrance

All of the above brands are lovely choices. And they’re widely used for a reason. They feel good. They smell good. They spread easily. But they’re often heavy in basic carrier oils and thin on the good stuff advertised on the label. When it comes to price, I think what matters is what makes up that ounce.

sm.batch

  • $12.25/oz

  • Meadowfoam, jojoba, argan, sweet almond

  • No added parfum

So yes, $12.25 an ounce. But it’s going to last you sooooooo long.

What’s in Your Body Oil?

Not all body oils are the same. Learn how to read ingredients and why meadowfoam, jojoba, and argan make a difference for lasting hydration.

Most body oils look the same. Golden liquid. Clean bottle. A few beautiful ingredients called out on the front. But the real story is on the back. The first ingredient tells you what most of the bottle is made of. And everything else follows from there.

Many body oils start with sunflower oil.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s light, it spreads easily, it softens the skin. It does its job. But it’s also a basic base, which means the more expensive oils—the ones you’re drawn to—are often used in smaller amounts.

You’ll also often see “fragrance” or “parfum.” Again, not inherently bad. But it’s a blend, grouped under one word. You don’t really see what’s inside it. It’s there to shape the scent, not necessarily to support the skin.

I wanted to take a different approach.

Meadowfoam. Jojoba. Argan. Sweet Almond — a few, rich oils working together, each in meaningful amounts.

  • Meadowfoam helps the skin hold onto hydration, so what you feel lasts.

  • Jojoba absorbs easily and works with your skin, not just on top of it.

  • Argan brings softness and a quiet, natural glow.

  • Sweet Almond gives the formula slip, making it feel smooth and effortless to apply.

Your skin feels soft when you apply it, and soft hours later.

No added fragrance. No unnecessary complexity.
